My oil furnace has a red reset button. Should I keep pressing it?

No. Press it once at most. If the burner doesn’t start or shuts off again, stop. Each extra press can push more oil into the firebox, and that pooled oil is both messy and dangerous. A furnace that keeps locking out usually has a clogged nozzle or filter, a fuel supply problem or a failing burner part that needs service.

Why is my electric furnace running but blowing cool air?

Electric furnaces heat in stages using several elements. If one or more elements burn out, or the sequencer that switches them on fails, the blower keeps running but the air comes out lukewarm. A tripped breaker for part of the heat can cause the same thing. A technician can test each element and control to find the problem.

Why does my heat pump's auxiliary heat come on so often?

Auxiliary heat is supposed to help on the coldest days or during defrost. If it runs often in mild weather, the heat pump may be low on refrigerant, iced over or not running properly, or the thermostat may be set up wrong. Can I switch from oil to propane without replacing everything?
